War Department Trenton 17 October 1799 Sir I have just received a note from the Comptroller of the Treasury informing me, that the Accounts of Samuel Lewis Senior, on the books of the Treasury are settled, and a ballance found due from him on one of them, is transfered to the books of the Accountant. That in relation to the monies advanced to M^r. Lewis from the War [undecipherable: office] a considerable misapplication is evident, the particulars of which, can be ascertained by the Secretary in his own Department. You will be pleased to cause copies of the accounts of M^r. Lewis, for advances made to him, to be furnished to me, in order that I may have a full view of the subject.
