Sir,
I have received your letters of the 27th June and 28th July last, with the first and sixth numbers of the work entitled "Preces des evenements militaires" As far as I am able to form an opinion of this production, it has great merit for justness of the condensed details, as well as for the energy and matter of the observations. I could wish the second and third numbers had arrived and must request you to continue your kindness [strikethrough: and forward me] the successive numbers as they appear, and to charge the amount to the War Department in any account you may have to render the Secretary of State or Secretary of the Treasury for disbursements made by the orders of this letter.
I shall also thank you to send me any new publications military or political as they appear which may arrest public attention, or be deemed to possess much merit.
With great respect,
I have the honor to be, Sir,
Your most obedt. Servt,
James McHenry
Jos. Pitcairn Esq°
Hamburg.
