Description

Lists reasons for Augustus de Grasse being "left out of the service" after being employed as an engineer, citing gambling with government money and lack of usefulness as an engineer. Advises that the man not be encouraged to expect an appointment to the corps of Artillerists & Engineers. Confirms the apparently long time a letter took to reach Adams as the result of a mis-dating on McHenry's part -- the letter was not as old as Adams supposed. Notifies Adams of two recommendations of a civilian doctor as an ensign for the 6th Regiment.
