Providence ss September 18th 1799 —
Then Personally appeared the within named David Alverson and after being Carefully examined and Cautioned to tell the Strict truth and nothing but the truth made solemn oath to the within Deposition by him Subscribed before me —

I David Alverson of Johnston in the State of Rhode Island & Providence Plantations of lawful age testify & say that I formerly an Inhabitant of Nova Scotia & was there acquainted with William Maxwell some years previous to the American War & knew the said William to be a Man of good reputation & in good circumstances as to land Stock & other property. I the said David further testify that the said [strikethrough: John] William being firmly attached to the cause of America & having joined Colonel Jonathan Eddy & a Party of the Americans in attempting to reduce Fort Cumberland to the American arms in the year 1776 — in which cause he was compelled to quit the Province aforesaid & to leave his Family & property behind him
