War Department, Trenton, Sept. 17, 1799.
Sir,
I have examined the Books and find Joseph Johnston has not received his Land Warrant — If the Power of Attorney is complete, as to our Rules, viz: the identity of the Soldier proven, either by the attestation of a respectable Witness, known to the Magistrate; or the Certificate of the Magistrate; with the Certificate of the Clerk of the County that such person is a Magistrate; — the Warrant can issue, and be transmitted to you — however, if you will please to transmit me the Power, I will do the necessary thing to expedite the business.
I am happy to hear you and your family continue well and those who continue in the neighbourhood — I wish for the time when we shall all return again to Philadelphia — I am obliged to you for your information relative to my house — We are all in good health here. Pray how is Tench Francis?
I am, Sir, Yours sincerely
Samuel Lewis Senr.
