New York 4^th Sep^r 1799 Samuel Hodgdon Esq^r Sir I have received your favor of 2^d Inst. and with Respect to my furnishing the Artillery Companies with Coats Vests, I would observe, that the Sec^y Requested me under date of the 15^th July last, to procure as many suits for the Artillery Troops in this State, as should in Hamiltons opinion be wanted, and have the Same made up & Distributed to the proper Officers, this would soon be accomplished, was the demand only for this State, but Gen^l Hamⁿ is daily Requiring me to furnish Coats Hatts wanted in other States, which is considerable I am not desirous of this Trouble, but as there is no supply of those articles on hand in the Public Stores, I am obliged to comply with the Gen^l Request — and trust it will be approved of by the Sec^y at War — I am glad you have retained the Coat Vest out of the Number sent to you for Cap^tn Irvins Company, and shall Replace them in the Parcel I Purpose forwarding to Cap^tn Elliotts at Reading — I was this moment favord with a letter from the Sec^y at War, directing me to supply Cap^tn Staats Morris Comp^y with Coats & Hats which shall meet due attention I am Sir with Respect Your Hble S^t Eben^r Stevens [Samuel Hodgdon Esq^rs Superintend^t Milit^y Stores Philadelphia] [Col^l Eben^r Stevens N.
