Apprehension Respecting Indian Hostilities
Document 1799Major Craig makes Samuel Hodgdon aware of popular apprehension regarding Indian hostilities. Craig hopes the distribution of the Indian annuity will serve to pacify the Indians.

[postmark] PITTSG PA AUG 30 Samuel Hodgdon Esq. 20 Philadelphia Pittsburgh 30th August 1799 Sir The Mail arriving this day as Usual but without A letter from You or any other of my Correspondents in public Office in the City leaves me under disagreeable apprehensions for the Health & Safety of you & Family together with that of my other Friends I trust however you have not neglected to make Use of Every means in your power of Escaping from the Dreadfull Malady with which it is said Your City is again Visited - Our Frontier Settelers are apprehensive that some of the Western Indian Nations are disposed to be Hostile. I hope however that this disposition is not General and that the Annual of the Stipendary goods which I presume is now about to be distributed to the Nation generaly with Induce them to be Peaceable - Should this find you in the City I have to beg of you to send me A Barrell of Musquevedo Sugar by the first Conveyance that may offer - I am very respectfully Sir Your Obedient Servant Isaac Craig Saml.
