Knoxville August 28 1799 My Fríend and Brother I received your letter forwarded by your friend Charles Hicks, and I think your Advice to the Chiefs was Good, God is from them examples the Nation is disposed to follow. The little Turkey recomm— ended a good Act, to give up all the Stolen Horses, and if he had any he would have done better to have Set as Good example in delivering them up first. He wants to be like a great Chief worthy of leading the Nation. I hate pain to get the Horses, and use it both for my own Brethren, the white People and the Red. By getting the Horses I shall relieve the distress of poor families And the distress that would fall on the heads of the Indians. I Shall as it were, put up my hand Against the Blow of the Angry people and Stop it, I urge peace and good Neighborhood, or in other Words, Love between the White and Red people, and if I can See that accomplished I Shall be happy as it respects our Country.
