Sir,
The accounts of John [undecipherable] forwarded by you to this Office have undergone examination, & the result is that a number of receipts have been found, to be most shamefully altered from a small to a large amount. There are also a variety of charges for goods said to have been purchased & delivered by him to the Indians after drawing the pay and their return home, which were not within his duty — These, together with other charges not supported by vouchers agreeable to this abstract stated, amounting in the aggregate to Dollars 1124.97, being together will leave a balance due the United States Drs [undecipherable] —
This being the case, it will be proper for you to ascertain the most effectual manner of securing the payment of the balance due to the United States — & the probability there may be of success, & inform me thereof for my government —
Sam G. [undecipherable]
