Knoxville 14 August 1799 Sir, I now enclose you a copy of Col. Butlers account as a continuance to his Commission for the Treaty with the Cherokees, as also Cap^tn Butlers account as a Commissioner for running the line, to which accounts I have paid Col. Butler 418$ and Cap^tn Butler 1783.37/8^th. This last account I have paid by virtue of Col. Butlers Signature, as I suppose he had creative powers for the other Commissioner, and so empowered by the Government. The first account which is Col. Butlers I made an objection to, which he gave his opinion I had no right to do. — My objection was founded on the Commission being at an end, when his account was closed and refused for in full for that duty. But he quoted me your letter of the 15 February, which he was persuaded continued him on that Service, and I have assumed it to subject to your opinion and decision ——— I have also paid Cap^tn Richard 600$ by virtue of Gen^t.
