Intendant of Stores Office War Department 14^th August 1799 Sir, The Secretary of War has shown me your letter to him under yesterdays date. Until I read the letter I had never heard the name of M^r Hewit, mentioned as having in charge any public property whatever. I beg you will if possible ascertain by whom M^r Hewit has been entrusted with public property, the time when and the kinds of property committed to his care. When this information is obtained proper measures will be taken to make him account for every thing that has been committed to his charge. In the mean while it may be proper you should be present at the Sale of what he calls his property on saturday next and as far as you may be able to ascertain public property in his possession you will forbid the Sale.
