Sir,
On the 8th instant I received your letter of the 17 ulto. covering returns of the Clothing and Indian Departments for the Months of January February and March 1798. the Vouchers should have accompanied them, as no Credit can be obtained in my Books until they are examined and found Systematically right. I have an account of the Receipts and deliveries in the Months of April May and June 1797 with the Vouchers. A considerable quantity of Clothing was forwarded to the address of Colonel Meigs in the last quarter of the year 1797, marked Fort Massac Deposit. I have no account how they have been disposed of. Inform him on the subject by this conveyance. Mr Sibley, in his letter of the 1st April 1799, mentions the arrival of Twelve Hogsheads of Clothing at Detroit late last fall; but he has not noted their marks and numbers, nor to whom they are addressed, Whether all for his Post, or a part to some other destination. This is essential to be known here, to enable me to compare his account of their contents with the original Invoices which I have before me. He mentions his being employed in taking an account of these Hogsheads, and in his subsequent letter of the 1st July 1799, he mentions that the quantity Entered in the Twelve Hogsheads are stated as Invoice in this quarter. Ten Watch Coats and twelve Blankets excepting. Also the marks and numbers of the Hogsheads are wanting. If only two the Hogsheads had been sent to the Post the examination would be easy but twice that number has been forwarded with various contents—
let this information be forwarded immediately. The Returns and Vouchers forwarded by Colonel Strong to the War Office have never come to my hands. I have made diligent enquiry after them, but hitherto in vain. they must be replaced by duplicates.—
If Doctor Brown should be still with you present my best respects to him, and tell I shall be very happy to see him after his long absence.—
I am Sir,
Your most Obedient Servant.
Samuel Hodgdon
Mr Jon: Schiefflin.—
Philadelphia 12 August 1799.—
Sir, It has been intimated to me several times that you have retired from public life and declined the appointment you held as Clothier to the Army; but I have never had official information of the fact. Be pleased to state to me how the matter stands, and how you have disposed of the business to effect a settlement of your accounts with me in case the information I have received should be true.—
In the fall of Ninety seven a quantity of Clothing was forwarded to Fort Massac as a Deposite to meet any cases that might be special. they were sent to your address and marked Fort Massac Deposite; as they are charged to you and Notice, the transportation was given at the time I presume you have Knowledge of the deliveries. If so, be pleased to state to me particularly to what Regiments the detachments belonged that received the Clothing this information is necessary to further System now forming in keeping the Clothing accounts—
