It will be necessary towards the settlement of the accounts rendered by you for expenditures of the Quarter master Department that I should be furnished as soon as possible with an account covering all moneys received & debts arising from the sale of such Public property as have been assigned [undecipherable] by you, & your receipts for which the proceeds have or may come into your accounts. You will also be pleased to note in what the apparent balance on your acct current consists. An early communication is desired, so that I may be enable to report thereon —

In the accounts of [undecipherable] as Pay master to the late Corps to [undecipherable]ampton, there is a charge exhibited for his compensation from 1 April to the 10th July 1799 @ 50 Dollars [undecipherable] month, & the authority on which the allowance of [undecipherable] month is made is the letter of the Secy of War to [undecipherable] of the 7 inst — On enquiring of the Quarter Master General I find he has also made [undecipherable] an allowance of 1½ Dollars p day from [undecipherable] March to 20 July, for his compensation acting on the same station as Deputy Quarter master General, yours equally. As these charges are for services performed within the same period I have to request that the Secy of War will inform whether the latter allowance[d]
