[220] M^r James Baker Accountants Office Corner Baltimore^f August 2^d 1799 For Your account of Supplies to the Troops of the United States in the State of Maryland from the 1^st January to 30 July 1799 amts p^r your Staten^t to D^rs 7921.41 has been settled after making deductions of mileage, alle charges arising from money paid by you to the Officers of the 9^th Reg^t in lieu of form rations & rations for their Servants. The former is never allowed but under such peculiar circumstances as would render it impossible for the Officers to muster with their men & then it can only be but by express provision of the Secretary of War. D^rs 74.19 The latter is rejected because the Officers drawing for their Servants do not certify on honor that the servants they draw for are duly inlisted Soldiers & that he or they have never been inlisted in any other corps for the time thereon drawn for from which circumstances it is presumed their Servants were not duly inlisted Soldiers & of course they have been debited as p^r the inclosed Statement, 221.60 228.3 These the amount admitted by the Accountant D^rs 7633.12 for which you will obtain a Credit on the Books of this Office By the inclosed Statement you will observe you have debited on the Books of this Office with D^rs 7216.41 from which deduct your former credit of Dollars 6733.12 will leave you debtor to the U S the sum D^rs 1583.29 for which sum you are held accountable.
