Springfield July 31^st 1799. Sir Enclosed are my Returns of the Armory & Military Departments, you will find my receipt for Tools &c made in the Factory, subsequent to September 30^th ultimo, they are comprised in the three Quarterly Returns, ending 30^th June. I wish they may meet your approbation. The Engine & Gunstocks arrived a few days since in good order. Is it your intention, that I procure for the Engine [strikethrough: —] Leather Hose & Buckets, or will you have these necessary articles forwarded on from Philadelphia. The two tun of Hoop & Nail rod from— was not received in reason to be noticed in this Return. The Superintendent of the Armory expects in future, to turn in not less then four hundred Muskets Monthly of course we may calculate to be out of Gunstocks in February. a time of year almost impossible to procure them— I mention this that you may Judge of the expediency of forwarding on a Quantity more previous to the setting in of Winter — The Racks for the Muskets in the several Magazines are all filled, shall I procure to be made, Arm Chests to hold the overplus? — Only twenty three Muskets have been received from private Factories, they appear on my return — Samuel Hodgdon Esq^r I am Sir Your obedient Servant Jno.
