L'Hompt Stevens Esqr Accountants Office
New York July 31 1799
Sir
I received in due time your letter of the 23d Instant on the subject of claims now on Governors Island supposed to have been paid for by the United States to the late Contractors —
As none of the accounts for supplies to the Garrison on Governors Islands in the Year 1791 were ever settled at this Office it was impossible for me to give you the information you requested — but the enclosed copy of a letter from Mr [undecipherable] [undecipherable] Clerks Comptrollers Office in answer to myself will probably throw some light upon this mysterious business —
Should the present Contractor [undecipherable] upon his account you will please to give me an account thereof, that I may be enabled to make the necessary entries on the Books of this Office —
Saml & N.S.
