L' Henry Stevens Dep^t Accountants Office New York July 31^st 1799 Sir I received in our last years letter of the 23^d Instant on the subject of claims now on Governors Island [undecipherable: probable reading "reported"] to have been paid for by the United States to the late Contractor — As none of the accounts for supplies to the [undecipherable] on Governors Island in the Year 1791 were ever settled at this Office it was impossible for me to give you the information you requested — but the enclosed copy of a letter from M^r [undecipherable] [undecipherable] Clerks [undecipherable] Office — in answer to my [undecipherable] will probably throw some light upon this mysterious business Should the present Contractor take them upon his accounts you will please to give me an account thereof, that I may be enabled to make the necessary entries in the Books of this Office & Sam & M S — Caleb Swan Esq^t July 31^st 1799 Pay Master Gen^l Sir I herewith have you the accounts of [undecipherable] Samuel & [undecipherable] who acted as Pay master on a late Military [Expedition] to Northampton in the State of Pennsylvania Together with an Abstract of the charges against that Office Taken from the Books of this Office — you are accordingly requested to give them a proper examination, and report the balance remaining on the hands of the said Pay master — that measure may be taken for refunding this amount to the Treasury of the United States.
