John Habersham Esq^r Collector Savannah G^o Accountants Office July 22 1799 Sir On settlement of the accounts of one Jones [undecipherable] as he has acknowledged to have recev^d of you thirty [undecipherable] dollars on account of his fee, which sum will be [undecipherable] to your Credit, on the Books of this Office — [signed] W^m [undecipherable] --- Cap^t Thomas Hallet Fort Jay, July 25^th 1799 Sir In answer to your letter of the 22 Inst^t I would observe that it is an Established rule that when a deserter deserts he forfeits whatever pay may be due him at the time; and that in case of his being apprehended, or delivering himself up his pay again commences but is to be stopped until it shall amount to the expence (if any there be) which have been incurred by his desertion. Upon having recourse to the Books of this Office, I find that the sum of One Hundred seventy eight Dollars 6¹¹/100 was expended in pursuing &apprehending Richard Grant Alias Brown, you will therefore be pleased to retain in your hands the pay of the latter unless he has been due on for the month of June 1799 — from Y^r H.
