Philadelphia. 28 June. 1799. your letter of yesterday is before me— The letter you mention was not enclosed, left out I suppose by mistake — when it comes to hand it shall be attended to — Commissions for all services are embraced in the Salary — Agency is very extensive and gives you every thing to do — Gen. Glau Gen^l Hamilton has written to the Secretary on your business; that will fix it as it should be — With the other articles to your answer, the Materials for making Musket Cartridges may be forwarded — On a former occasion I mentioned to the Secretary your loan of Cartridges to the United States — it has since however Stopt, and the note is not yet out — I think it will be well to order some of the field Artillery at Springfield to your post, for although the Carriages are new, and returned completely equipt, and in order, I fear on examination it will be found considerable repairs or alterations are necessary — Sam^r Sir; your most Obedient Servant Col. Ebenezer Stevens — Samuel Hodgdon Since writing the above a letter has been handed the Secretary of War, written by the Navy Agent in New york to the Secretary of the Navy here, requesting the occasional use of the Magazine on Governors Island for depositing the Ammunition from the Vessels of War that may arrive in your harbour — the Secretary has no objection to the use of such part of the Magazine as can be spared for the purpose; but you must not be considered as officially receiving, keeping and delivering such articles as they may be disposed — Such arrangements as may have a tendency to facilitate our views say those of the Navy business may be made by you and the Navy Agent; but such arrangement is not to be considered as imposing any New duties on you as Agent for the Department of War.
