Knoxville June 26^th 1799 Sir I have written to you several times respecting Horses that have been Stolen by the Indians, and refer you to my letter of the 5^th of June, Since which, the Indians have sent in several, So that I have now Eighteen on hand, being deprived of one by Disease, a Copy of My Register of them I now enclose, More I expect, And as their increasing Numbers will be expensive, request Your Advice what I shule do with those after Advertising them for three months if no [undecipherable: probable reading "claimants"] Appear for them; it has been my usual practice to sell them at public Sale and give Credit for the Amount, but as this Mode of proceding Should have your Approbation - I request it which has been formerly given - The expence of keeping them now is only Salt, with one Attendant but as Soon as the Range decreases by the Season, the expence of their keeping will be great, as their Numbers Are Continually more, And I expect will be larger — Please Sir to give me Your directions concerning them immediately I am very Respectfully Your Humb Serv^t David Henley Agent of War The Honorable James McHenry Secretary of War Philadelphia
