Philad. 20th Jany 1799.
Dear Sir
you know the [undecipherable] of selecting fit & qualified persons for the [undecipherable: proposition] of officers to the [undecipherable: draw] from S. Carolina & Georgia for the [undecipherable] additional regiments, was confided to your uncle. I mentioned your wish to him, while here, and I see no other wise account for the absence of your name [in] the list he [has] sent [in], and which is [long] by this time before the President, than by supposing that he has [undecipherable: nominated] you for the Provisional or [undecipherable] army. I think it [will] be proper
more [undecipherable: readily] to your uncle who is charg'd with [undecipherable] selections for [this] army.
with [sincere] esteem &
Dr Sir your obt
