Regim^ts — not every but what I have [undecipherable] parts to the Officers of said Reg^ts Respecting them — I am in Want of the Articles of war, no Recruit can be listed without having first a knowledge of Their Contents — As a Dozen Drums — Capt Henry Company, is without any, & he has applied to me for one, and I know of no [undecipherable] that can make them or even repair them — So [undecipherable] I want you to add, to my list, every article that may possibly be called for, and will thank you to let me know precisely what Q^t Masters Store, a Colo: has a right to call for, for the use of his Regiment, comprehending [undecipherable] & [undecipherable] such as this [undecipherable] [undecipherable] Bottles, Musket [undecipherable] Tents, [undecipherable] orderly Books, Stationery, Blank Muster Rolls, Waggons & in fact every Article necessary for his Reg^t to be equip'd with — The Colo: of the 11^th Reg^t has sent me forward a Return of what he has in hand, & what the[y] stand in need of. As All Returns are made from I wish to be informed what Government allows them, so that I may make my demand in [undecipherable] Every article for [undecipherable] Jersey &c to the Eastward ought to be forwarded me, if our three Regiments are to be equipped — I have been obliged to hire them Army to learn the Mannel exercise and [undecipherable] Guards — Gen^l Hamilton tells me to write you for what is wanted here, for the use of the [undecipherable] Reg^ts I am quite surprized that the Sec^y at War should think I will accept of $1000. Dollars, I would rather be without the appointment [undecipherable] $1000 and assure you I will never put up with it for my Service for Government — he observes to me that M^r Farris receives only $1000 for his Service Considers his responsibility to be as great as mine — but I am certain mine is equal to his & far more troublesome is my Duty which I have to attend to — I am [strikethrough: [undecipherable]] the Troops & pay them [undecipherable] Orders any where, to find the means of Transporting them & their Baggage — I wish that I had declined accepting the Office, as it would been Thousands in my Pocket but as I have undertaken, I am willi= to persue it Provided I am Compensated for my trouble therein — I am Sir [undecipherable signature] [seal] Will thank you to enquire of the Sec^y of State if there is any certainty of the Port of St. Domingo being opened, and the time when it will probably take place — you will good enough to inform me of the Result by Return of Post [signature]
