[Docket notation:] Secretary of War to Governor of Connecticut transmitting [undecipherable] [undecipherable] [undecipherable] War Department James McHenry His Excellency the Governor of Connecticut Hartford War Department June 12^th 1799 Sir In consequence of an act of the Legislature of Connecticut for the purpose of ceding to the United States the jurisdiction of land for the erection of Forts Trumbull and Griswold, a copy of which act was enclosed in a letter from your Excellency requesting that a survey might be made, and the quantity of ground ascertained, necessary for this purpose I have directed the survey to be made, the result of which you will perceive by the following copy of the report of Capt Decius Wadsworth. " Fort Trumbull " Bounded and described as follows " Beginning at a stake and stones at low water mark about S W from said Fort, thence N 15½ deg W to a small wild cherry tree at the N W corner of a large " rock with a pile of stones round it 29½ rods, thence N 16½ " deg E 17 rods and 7 links to a stake in a stone wall – thence E " 7 deg it by said wall to the corner thereof 5 rods and an half – " thence by said walls N 8 degree W 9 rods – thence E 18 deg N by " said wall 41 rods – thence N ½ deg W by said wall 17 rods to " a low water Mark between two large rocks – thence down the ri- " ver or Harbour keeping at low water mark, to the bounds " afore mentioned, including Fort Trumbull and the pub- " lic works thereto belonging, and containing by survey eleven " acres and one quarter, together with all the privileges and ap- " purtenances thereto belonging. – " Fort Griswold " Bounded and described as follows viz: beginning at a stake " and stones at the side of a stone wall about 13 rods to the south- " ward of the S E corner of Fort Griswold – thence W 8 deg N keep- " ing two rods to the north of a stone walls 37 rods and 10 links " to a stake and stones in the wall at the S W corner of the Battery – " thence N 10 deg W keeping at the foot or bottom of the rock on which " said Battery stands 17 rods and 22 links to a stake in the wall – " thence E 8 deg N 44 rods to a stake and stones – thence N 1½ deg " 18 rods to a stake and stones – thence E 12 deg 24 rods and 6 links " to a stake and stones – thence S 9 deg E 22 rods to the W posts of " a pair of bars in a stone wall – thence W 6 deg it 9 rods and " 21 links to the corner of a stone wall – thence N 24 deg west by " said wall 14 rods to the bounds first mentioned, including Fort " Griswold and also the Battery between said Fort and river or " Harbour and containing by survey seven acres and forty " five rods together with all the privileges and appurtena- " nces thereto belonging " Having thus ascertained the limits of the ground necessary for the erection of the Fortifications contemplated, you will be pleased, as soon as convenient, to carry the intention of the Legislature into execution with great respect and regard I have the honour to be, Sir, Most Ob^d & very humb^le S^t.
