[10 June 1799 Uriah Tracy.] [[undecipherable] — [undecipherable]] [Hon^ble James Mc Henry Sec^y at War Philad^a] Littsfield 10^th June 1799 — My Dear Sir — Col. Taylor has been so obliging as to consult me concerning all the Officers mentioned in y^r Letter of the 31^st May — Brown for a Capt; Ledyard, Nager, Ruggles & Biers for Lieuts; I concur with him in the recommendations — altho I know [strikethrough: three] not half of them, yet they are so well recommended to me, that I doubt not of the propriety of their appointment. — Spalding I know not — but if Taylor recommended him — you will probably feel confidence in him — I very much wish Timothy Paine of Litchfield could have the other Major appointment. I shall see Col. Taylor soon & will write you further. — Some unavoidable delays have occurred in making out a list for the two Reg^ts of [undecipherable] [undecipherable]; thou shall be completed as soon as may be & forwarded. — As I do not get a Copy of the [undecipherable] laws last session, it will be convenient and almost necessary to have a Copy of the Army laws as [undecipherable] last Session — I am called upon from all parts of the State to explain many things, & direct about every thing, recruiting &c &c &c. Can you send me a Copy of that Law? — I am sorry to trouble you, but the recruiting service succeeds so violently in this State — that I am unwilling to delay an answer to a question a moment — I merely [undecipherable] questions, [undecipherable] that I fear to trust my memory upon. — The recruiting Officer in this town has nearly his number, & can have the whole in one hour, but I have advised him to wait a little & pick the best. — He has a fine set of stout orderly Yankees, as you would wish to see — and the recruiting is very successful all over the State — as I am informed. — with much esteem I am Sir y^r Obed^t Serv^t Uriah Tracy Hon^ble M^r McHenry N.B.
