June 3. 1799 I have recommended Cap^t James Taylor of North [strikethrough: Carolina] to the President of the U.S. for the appointment of Surveyor of the Port or delivery proposed to be established on Shell Castle or Beacon Island near Ocracoke Inlet; — and have the honour to request that Cap^t Taylor may not be ordered on any service incompatible with this appointment, till the pleasure of the President shall be known.
