Sir,
Philadelphia, 22d May, 1799
On my return from New york where I have spent two weeks on public business, I found your letter of the 27 ult Mr Haragar has accounted with Col O'Hara for the five Bills you mention, your account will receive a credit for them of course, and it makes no difference to me which of the amounts is debted — Since you to ascertain this and inform me. — It was necessary by the Instructions to close O'Hara's debit to the time he ceased to act, viz on the 1 July, 1796, and that all subsequent drafts should be placed to the Debit of his successor, in consequence of this move the five Bills amounting to 2,076 Dollars being subsequent were carried to the Debit of your account. — I have written to Mr Haragan on this subject; yet I wish you to know whether the Bills in question are accounted for any where, or Whether he then holds himself accountable for them, and to whom —
The bill for 95 Dollars with which you are charged, was drawn by John McIlleain in his capacity as Quarter Master for the Post of Niagara, on the Secretary of war, and by him vouched to be paid by me and charges to you, under an expectation that he would adjust the expenditure with you, or that he would do it with the accountant, who would place the amount to your credit — If not accounted for in either of those ways, you must charge it and it will be allowed you, and he will be here accountable. —
I am, Sir,
your most obedient servant.
Samuel Hodgson —
Col. John Wilkins, Junr —
Quarter Master General.
