Philadelphia, 18 May, 1794. Dear Sir. On my return from New york where I have spent a few days on public business I found your esteemed favour of the 1^st instance — I think it will be best to enclose to me the Certificates as stated in your letter — my private opinion always was that no recovery of exchange for the bad Certificates could meet a legal sanction; it was however my duty to make the experiment, as Men of principle might have felt themselves bound in equity to make the exchange although they might be of opinion that courts could not be compelled to do it — In any balance that may be due you I shall be personally answerable — Be pleased to send me the Eleven Certificates amounting to 3209 ⁷³/₁₀₀ Dollars, as stated in your letter, that I may immediately know the result respecting them — If good, they would be due on the 12^th of next month if not before presented to the Treasury — Be pleased to present my best respects to M^rs Winslow — with Sentiments of Esteem — your — Col.
