[Page 446 BJA01] S^r: Philadelphia 16 May, 1799 I was absent when your letter of the 13^th inst. came — I have since my Return made enquiry, and find that all your Clothing except a few Serjeants Vests and linen Overalls, and Coats for Musicians which are not in Store, have been forwarded — As soon as they are received, they will be sent to you. — your most obedient Servant — Samuel Hodgdon L^t John Macwharter Pay Mast^r to 11^th Reg^t Intendant of Issues Office, Philadelphia, 16^th May, 1799 — Sir, The day before yesterday I returned from Elizabeth Town and New york, to which places I have been requested to proceed to examine and finally determine on the propriety of receiving the Shot at those places cast by you for and on account of the United States. — I found that of the Shot sent to New york, as part of the contract, only Two thousand, five hundred and nine Twenty four pounders had passed inspection, and had been taken by the Agent for the Department of War to the public account; the remainder he says you were informed were defected, and subject to your own only for a future inspection — at Elizabeth Town I found Seven hundred and fourteen, Thirty four pound Shot, of which I accepted Five hundred and twenty four, and rejected One hundred and ninety — Of twenty four pounders Shot, I found Two thousand, and twenty, of which number Nine hundred and eighty eight were accepted, and one thousand and [strikethrough: thirty two] rejected — the good Shot I have sent to New york, the bad remain at Elizabeth Town to your order and account — I am not informed of the State of your accounts or revenue for the cartridges, more the contract in question; this circumstance has determined me to inclose a statement of such, part of it as has fallen under my own observation before I make my Report to the Treasury. — I shall expect to hear from you shortly on the subject — I exceedingly lamentue that indisposition prevented your attending at the inspection — Hope now you are much better. — I am, Sir, your most obedient servant — John Jacob Faesch, esq^r Boon Town Samuel Hodgdon Philadelphia, 16 May, 1799 — Sir, Enclosed is a statement of the Items wanted for the Garrisons as mentioned in General Hamilton's letter — all of which he requests may be immediately procured — In making the supply, reference ought to be had to the number on hand, and shortly reported, to be put into the public Store — the supply of Tents for the Regiments about to be raised ought not to be effected by the requisite supply for Garrison use — One hundred pairs of, and thirty pairs of Shoes — sixty five Shirts — thirty Blankets and thirty pairs of Linen Breeches are wanted for the Troops at Fort Wolcott, under the command of Captain Littlefield — General Hamilton requests they may be forwarded without delay, and that he be informed where they are sent — I am, Sir, your most obedient Servant — James McHenry, Esq^r Secretary of War — Samuel Hodgdon —
