I observe your Letter to Gen^l Darke in answer to he[undecipherable] on the subject of a appointments in the army, has been published. in several news papers here; a number of the friends of Government in this place who are exceedingly displeased at Gen^l Darke's conduct in general respecting the Government of the United States have requested me to write to you for a copy of Gen^l Darke's Letter to you which produced your reply. they suppose these Letters are not of a private nature. that they are official documents & that there can be no Impropriety. in your giving copies of them. for publication should you be of the[ir] opinion you will be pleased to have copies sent me. I can assure Sir. that we have no object in this request. but on[ly] to consider the good of your Country.
