Knoxville May 8^th 1799 Sir I received a letter from Doublehead, one of the principal Chiefs of the Cherokee [strikethrough: Nation] Nation, which I think it proper to forward to you, as well as my Answer, because it may be that the knowledge of Sentiments of the Indian may be of Consequence in respect to the late Agent, as also to them. Mr Mitchell the Resident [strikethrough: of the] Agent of the Cherokee Nation has been with me this morning. He mentions that all is well in that Nation; And that he received accounts of late from Mr Hawkins, that the Creeks seem friendly disposed. I think it proper to inform you that Mr Mitchell reports that Doublehead before his Death Called his People together and advised them to hold the American people fast by the hand, and ever to be their friends. This is a proof that [a] Chief was genuine as a friend, And am of opinion it would be good policy for Government to pay some attention to his Children, which is recommended by James McHenry —— J. D.
