Linens Better than Woolens in Warm Weather, Etc.
Document 1799Kalteisen laments the want of clothing at Fort Johnson and stresses the need for linen clothing to replace the woolens which are so uncomfortable for the soldiers in warm weather.
Letter from Cap.t Michael Kalteisen Dated 6.th May 1799 [number 94 in a circle] Fort Johnso, So. Carolina 6.th May 1799. Sir, I transmit you the returns of the Clothing &c. &c. of Fort Johnson for the months of March and April 1799 by which you will see what is here and what is really wanting. In my last letter to you I requainted you of the want of Clothing and mentioned the several artivles so much wanted which I must again request maybe sent as soon as possible; not a single pair of Linen Overalls, a few Woolen’s are now issued instead of Linen which makes the Soldiers murmer, Woolen beeing so uncomfortable in warm weather. you will see by the Clothing return what articles are so much wanted. Serjeant & Musicians Clothing and Side Arms: Ordnance Stores, such as Sheep Skins, Cartridge Paper and many other things which are highly necessary and cannot be got here and without them no defence can be made in case of an attack on this post: you may see by my monthly returns what is here here and what is really wanted.
