[Address leaf: M^r Samuel Meeker / Merchant / Philadelphia] M^r Samuel Meeker New Orleans 20 April 1799 D^r Sir Yesterday I rec^d inform=ation (the truth of which I cannot altogether [undecipherable]) that Robert M^cCrea who I [undecipherable: understood] express from Natchez to Cincinnati & Lexington through the woods, was robbed near the [undecipherable] River by a party of Indians or White Men, of Bills of Exchange, to Am^t of twenty five Thousand Dollars drawn by the following persons — 12,000 [strikethrough: Dollars] by Cap^t [undecipherable: Shaumquin] on the Secretary of War for the Pay of the Troops — 5,000 by Dan^l Asevagan on William Bill of Phil^a — 7,000 Dollars by Francis Jones on John Wilkins D^t M^t Gen^l of Pittsburg — [strikethrough: the whole mea] amounting in my fair, [to] five Thousand of which had my Blank endorsements — & when addressed to M^r John M. Hunt of Lexington, the Remainder [strikethrough: were] addressed to Dep^t Hunt of Cincinnati who was auth=orised to indorse them — I have to request that you will therefore be pleased to take immediate Steps to Stop the acceptance & Payment of these Bills, in Case of an attempt of the kind should be made by the Villains who have got possession of them, and warn all persons not to recieve them unless they bear paper that the hand of either [undecipherable] or John M.
