[Addressed to: Alexander Hamilton Esq^r., New York] [Endorsement: 664. 4 [undecipherable] / [undecipherable]] [49 S^r.] New York 17^th April 1799 Dear General I will thank You to take the Statement of M^r Mangin's services, with you, to the Secret^y at War, there will be but little due him from Government, as the account now Stands, he has been of essential Services in Conducting the Works at Fort Jay &c and I am sincerely desirous to have a Settlement made with [strikethrough: him] — Respecting my Compensation for the Services I have renderd the UStates, the Secret^y of War, has left it optional with me to receive it by a Salary or Commission on Amount of Disbursements, — I have profferd the latter, & will make out a Statement of the Disburs^ts. charging 2½ p^rCent Commission on the Same — which will be for my Services up to the 5^th of Feb^y last — And from that period will accept of a Salary say $2000. p^rYear, for my Services on the future — I have been attentive to the discharge of the Duty incumbent on me in my Office as far as was in my Power, and trust my Services have met with approbation, You must be sensible that it must have been attended w^th a Sacrifice to my Private business by devoting So much of time to the Public Service, as has been requisite for me to do — Wishing You a pleasant Journey Home Gen^l.
