[Circular] General Orders New York, May 18^th 1783 Major General Hamilton makes known, That by an act of Congress of the United States last past is established as the generals law the said state of provisions shall consist of eighteen ounces of bread or flour as when neither can be attained of one quart[y?] Rice, or one and a half pound of Sifted [undecipherable] Indian meal, one pound and a quarter of fresh Beef, or one pound of salted Beef, or three quarters of a pound of salted Pork, and for fresh meat the feed shall be at the rate of two [undecipherable] for every [undecipherable] rations, soap at the rate of [undecipherable] two [undecipherable] hundred rations, rate of a pound [undecipherable] of every hundred rations. And That by the same act it is made lawful for the general of the army or the commanding officer of any department at the end of garrison as [undecipherable] at his Discretion to cause to be given from time to time [undecipherable] the Troops under their command, and of each day of rations as shall have been provided for their purpose, Rum, Whiskey or other ardent Spirits in quantities as not exceeding half a gill to each man, per day, except in cases of fatigue service, or such extraordinary [undecipherable] and that whensoever supplies thereof shall be on hand, there shall be issued to the Troops Vinegar, a Private of two quarts for every hundred rations — The several Contractors and Commandants of Corps and detachments, as well in Garrisons as in the field will govern themselves accordingly. — When more than the ordinary allowance of ardent Spirits is to be made there must be a special order of the commanding Officer expressing the special purpose as the warrant to the Contractor — A true Copy Philip Church, aide de [undecipherable] [Addressed: Captain P.
