Philadelphia 16th Feby 1799.
Sir,
I have received yours of the 11th instant with the enclosed Papers — As an answer to Deaths representations I enclose an extract of Major Craigs letter, which informed of his absenting himself from Pittsburgh; it is dated the 11th November last —
"I have been greatly deceived by Jacob Death, after working [underline: three] days he disappeared and has since been seen on the road to Philadelphia in company with a Woman of not very good fame. I must beg of you to enquire for him, and endeavour to secure the forty Dollars advanced to him."
This is a different Statement from that given you by Mr Death — But as I have received a letter from Major Craig this morning informing me that he should be in the City in a few days — I would wish you to rest on the security you have obtained until his arrival, when I will shew him Deaths letter and advise you further on the subject — I have seen Mr Levi Hollingsworth since I recd your letter — he had informed me the Muskets had gone safely to hand some time ago, he seems greatly surprised at finding they had not reached you, and promises to take immediate measures to investigate the business the result you shall be advised of.
