I owe it to Major Lillie to transmit you the enclosed letter and to say that he was esteemed in the Army a respectable man and Officer
The subject of your letter of the 3d Instant will be immediately attended to and you will be further advised concerning it. But I perceive that it will be useful for me in the progress of the trusts, which I am and shall be charged to execute, to have an accurate statement of the Officers of the corps of Artillerists and Engineers, and the distribution of them which has been heretofore made among the different portions of this corps, the sooner I can be favored with this the better.
