Pittsburg January 4^th 1799. Dear Sir, I have received your letter of the 28^th Ult^o. With respect to Governor Sargents Stores shipped for Natchez — On the 8^th Ult^o in charge of Judge McGuire a list of the Articles then sent forward was transmitted you enclosed in my letter of the 14^th Ult^o. Two Boxes of books &c^a were sent by Judge Tillon on the 13^th of October last. Also on the 31^st of August one Quarter Cask of Wine by Doctor Carmichael. And on the 22^nd of June one Trunk and two boxes were addressed to him at Fort Washington and delivered to Capt W^m H Harrison Ag^t QM^r at that Post on the 23^rd July and it is possible those Articles may still be at Fort Washington — I presume Judge McGuire has not been stopped by the ice, as I have not heard of him since he took his departure on the 8^th Dec^r. If goods can be transported to Natchez for forty dollars per Ton by Sea; I presume all the United States Stores will in future go that way — Our River is not now navigable. I a few days ago found it necessary to unload Stores destined for Natchez, the ice having shut up the river. — I shall inform Major Kirkpatrick as you have desired. — Duncan Campbell the only one of the Ship Carpenters now here is dismissed & returning to the City at settlement of his Acc^t for Services here and Allowance for returning home — A Balance appeared in his favour, of which he requested a Draft on you for Sixty dollars, which I shall accordingly give him on you for that Sum. — A few days ago I had a letter from Col^o Forrest in which he requests me to refund the sum he paid into the Treasury on Acc^t of my lands on the Ohio — I have to beg of you to undertake that for me I expected to see you in the course of the Winter but cannot leave my post untill the Stores & Troops now here destined for the Posts on the Ohio & Missisipie are off my Hands — NB You have enclosed a list of Articles forwarded addressed to Governor Sargent previous to those sent by Judge McGuire — I am Dear Sir, your Obed^t H^ble Servant Sam^l Hodgdon Esq Isaac Craig [Address panel: Samuel Hodgdon Esquire / Philadelphia] [Docketing, lower right: [undecipherable]]
