Sir,
I have received your letter of the 8th Instant— In answer I inform you that it is not proper to remit the small sum you mention, because no person is authorised to sign a receipt— perhaps you have some friend here to do it— if so the Money shall be paid to your order in their behalf—
If no other person offers— the Member of Congress from your District will I have no doubt sign your receipt and take the Money to you on his return— In any way so that I can get a receipt I will pay the Money—
