Philadelphia 25 Sep^t 1798 Dear Sir I have received your two letters of the 2^d &a 9^th inst. the first inclosing your statement of the affair between you and M^r Robert Smith. I have read it over as you write notably concise, with great attention, and cannot help approving of your conduct and censuring M^r Smiths behaviour, highly reprehensible, uncandid and to the last degree unjust. At the same time I have with satisfaction seen, the interest he felt for a late partner and old friend, and the moment and manner of his shewing it is characteristic of a noble mind. I sent the enclosure to M^r Wheaton being on my return from the office the day I received it. You will see by the inclosed what his opinion is of the transaction and the parties. I have written to M^r Selman & hope he will be able to obtain the influence of Taylor to settle the present matter. I suspect some of them that made use of your ace are under great instances and keep me out of it, as long as possible, by small cards and fair gambling.
