[Sec^y of War.] [Respecting Land Bounties] [answered & List forwarded.] War Department 8^th Dec^r 1798 Sir A letter from his Excellency R. Brooke then Governor of Virginia, dated 23^d of December 1795 was transmitted to the Secretary of War together with an authentick list of the names of the officers and soldiers of the Virginia line on the continental establishment who were entitled to the bounty land given by the State to her soldiers. This list specifies the rank and time of service of each of the claimants. The list transmitted by Governor Brooke contains the names only of the persons in whose fav^r warrants had issued in Summer 1795, and his letter contains an assurance that a similar list shall be kept of the names of the persons to whom warrants shall in future issue, and transmitted to this Department An authentick list will greatly expedite the completion of titles to the Virginia Military bounty lands, as where a warrant the person obtaind it is now unknown That such a warrant had been originally issued, and some losses of names on the list furnished have occasioned the trouble and delay of applying for particular certificates You will, therefore, permit me, Sir, to request a supplemental list of the names of those in whose favour warrants have issued since the 23^d of Dec^r 1795 to the present time, and from time to time as warrants are made out in future, and to suggest that any names which may have been omitted in the former list may be placed on the list requested I have the honor to be Sir your most ob^d & h^ble serv^t James McHenry His Exc^y James Wood Gov^t of Virginia
