Treasury Department Comptroller's Office December 3. 1798— Sir/ Herewith you will receive a copy of [James] Wilson's deposition taken on the 23. of October last before John Gibson; also a letter annexed thereto dated the 9^th Ultimo from Edward Day late Deputy Commissary to the Army of the United States, to the Comptroller of the Treasury; both relating to the accompts of James O'Hara Esquire, Contractor for supplying the said Army with provisions. I likewise transmit enclosed, a copy of my letter to M^r O'Hara dated the 19^th of October last with copies of the statements numbered 1 and 2 therein referred to.— I am Sir very respectfully Your obed^t Servant [undecipherable signature] William Simmons Esquire.— [Docket on outer wrapper: Comptroller offi[ce] / John Steele / [undecipherable] 3[,] 1798 / to [undecipherable] / [undecipherable]] [Enclosure docket: Copy of a letter dat[ed] [Oct?] 19^th [1798?] / [from the?] Comptroller to [James O'Hara?]] Treasury Department Comptroller's Office October 19^th 1798.— Sir, Your accompt as Contractor for supplying the Army with provisions, under your Contracts of the 21^st of April and 1^st of June 1796 (for provisions delivered at various posts for the use of the Army, from the 1^st of June 1796, to the 31^st of May 1797,) has been adjusted at the Treasury, and a balance of One hundred and ten thousand, seven hundred and forty four dollars and fifty nine cents stated to be due from you to the United States.— The amount of advances brought to your debit in this settlement, is Three hundred and eighty four thousand dollars, and the amount admitted to your credit is Two hundred and seventy three thousand, two hundred and fifty five dollars and forty one Cents; which latter sum is [underline: one hundred and twelve thousand five hundred dollars and fifty seven Cents less] than the amount of Credit claimed in the accompt rendered to the Treasury, and is composed of the following sums, the particulars whereof are exhibited in the enclosed statements numbered 1 & 2 .............. Viz. This sum being the amount of N^o 1 suspended: the supplies therein charged to have been deposited, being considered your property & when issued will be admitted to your credit under the subsequent Contract ............... 93.154. 62 This sum being the amount of N^o 2 .................. 19.346. 15 Dollars ........ 112.500. 57 Your accompt in the capacity aforesaid has been closed on the books of the Treasury and the balance being Three hundred and sixty one thousand, two hundred and thirty nine dollars and nine cents which appeared to your debit therein (consisting of that before stated to be due from you of One hundred and ten thousand seven hundred and forty four dollars and fifty nine cents and of advances subsequently made amounting to Two hundred and fifty thousand four hundred and ninety four dollars and fifty Cents) transferred to the books of the Accountant of the War Department, where the expenditure thereof is to be exhibited; to whom the accompts received at this Office with your letter of the 13^th of April last, have also been transmitted for adjustment. As it is made his duty by a late act of Congress, to examine and settle, in the first instance, all accompts for services, or supplies in relation to the Military establishment of the United States, you will be pleased to forward all your subsequent accompts directly to his Office.— I am Sir, Very respectfully Your obed^t Servant.
