I have received this Day. in My last Dated the 17^th of the Same, I do Acknowledge the Debt you Justly Sustain, requesting You at the Mean time to Oblige Me so far as to pay to M^r James Caldwell or to his Order two Differents Drafts favor of Me. One for six Months of present due him of his Years Salary, the Other 3 Months of My Salary advanced by him as the Draft Does Mention. Although I have, I Believe, Made a Mistake, About the 6 Months he has Overcharged the last advanced One 3. Months of Salary — Having been Disappointed Sir, in Some private Business of My Own, it has not been in My power yet to reimburse the Sum that You Oblige me, but as I do Expect Now (may be before long before) to Make out My particular Attention shall be toward Whatever shall I owe Due before the expiration of the Year, or Little While after But Sir as I have Now Readily appeared the ac^t as it is Stand With Me at the present and You are Upon Closing Your Accounts With the public, I Will endorse this [undecipherable] on request of M^r W^m Simmons to pay to You the Ballance of eighty six Dollars and [undecipherable] Cents appeared due Me from the public find another Order [undecipherable] likewise to the [undecipherable] the Secretary at War, to pay to You Or to Your Order Six Months of My Salary from the 1^st of July Last to the last Day of December of this present Year as it is Mentioned in Your B.S. and if I am not Mistaken, there Will be a Balance in Your favor of 258^Dar....83 C^ts I have No Vouchers Whatever that I Know [undecipherable] for Money Disbursed for the public expenditures only those three Lodged in Your office, Not placed to My Credit as You Observe in Your favor to Me Dated On the 9^th of August Last.
