Was glad to find Jacob Death had returned in time to be useful in launching and transporting to Ganey — I have an idea that the Staff Officers will be affected in any degree by any appointments to be made in the new Army; but on this subject I have been informed shortly, as the commander in chief of the Army, Colonel Hamilton and some other officers of the higher grades are about assembling here to make all necessary arrangements — Gen^l. Washington will be here to morrow — The Secretaries of War and the Treasury have already arrived, the whole respect to go to business on Monday — With respect to your claim on the account of what you expend to discharge your engagements with Forrist, can only say, If they have been my own I could not have done more than I have to bring them to an adjustment; and several times I understood that all objections were removed, and payment was to be made, but when that was called for, the business seemed to begin anew — I will however, prosecute it until it is completed, and this with all possible dispatch, and will keep you advised of the state of my pursuits — On examination I find no advances have been made on account of the Ships Carpenters with you since the 21^st of July, except on account of Jacob Death, of which you were advised as usual; I have you made stoppage on adjustment with him — Twenty Dollars was paid his wife on the 21^st August, and Twenty more to his Father in law Carper Bros, at the [undecipherable] of his wife — &c, on the 14 September last — the [undecipherable] except for what remain with me — Nothing remarkable new — Enclosed you have Mr Dowin's receipt for another account; I expect to make him another, to the like sum, next week — adieu Sam Hodgdon [Major Isaac Craig —]
