[Staunton Oct 30^th [undecipherable] / Capt [undecipherable] Gibson's / [undecipherable] in Gib[undecipherable] / to [undecipherable] / Coln C] [[78]] [Rec^d [undecipherable] / Dec 12. ^th [undecipherable] / [undecipherable]] [[undecipherable] Williams Esq^r / Quartermaster [undecipherable] / of [undecipherable] of [undecipherable] / [undecipherable] Town] Staunton October 30^th 1798 S^r Serg^t Joseph Updegraff has requested me to write to you [strikethrough: respecting] his back pay which he claims as due him from the date of his inlistment Dec^t 10^th 1795. to the 26^th October - 97 the day on which he Joined & reported himself to me Serg^t Updegraff says he was inlisted by Cap^t Ben Price on the 10^th of December 1795. that he remained at Frederick Town under the Orders of Cap^t Price untill the 1^st of April 1796. Captain Price having no person to furnish provision longer told him he might go and work, but must report to him occasionally - which he says he done untill he reported himself to me - which was done as above mentioned - his pay was made out on my Rolls from that Period - and remarks noted accordingly will you please to inform me how this business stands, and whether he can receive pay, and if so, how to be obtained I am Sir with the Greatest respect your Ob^t William Simmons Esq^r Alex Gibson Cap^t 9 P.S. my Receipt Rolle for pay of May, June, & July. is detained for the Signature of some men on Command that have not returned as soon as was expected - but will in the course of two or three days. by next post it will be sent forward - please send me some blank pay, Muster, & Receit Rolls A G—
