Sir,
I received yours of the 17 Instant on the Subject of monies by me received in 1794 for Captain Seeby Pithian's Company, I had not supposed myself in any degree Accountable for the money to receive other than to the Captain on order and by whose direction I received them. The fact was the Captain was very ill and being an Acquaintance that he might be well taken care of, I had him brought to my House and Nursed, he requested me to procure him so much as to make out his Rolls, gave me order to receive the Monies due himself & Company, to pay them and take Vouchers for the Payments, which I did, and which Voucher and the balance in my hands I delivered and paid to Captain Pithian who was the proper officer and to whom I only considered myself Accountable. The receipt to me are in the order following.
" Haskell Ewing having Received from the [undecipherable] of my Company [undecipherable] hundred and [undecipherable] Dollars and twenty [undecipherable] forty [undecipherable] and [undecipherable] hundred and [undecipherable] Dollars and [undecipherable] The Amount of the Company Payrolls and [undecipherable] hereby [undecipherable] him for [undecipherable] of the Rolls as [undecipherable] [undecipherable] to have received [undecipherable] and the balance in full from him of all the monies [undecipherable] him received [undecipherable] the [undecipherable] money [undecipherable] yet remains to be accounted for between us December 27 1796 Signed, Seeby Pithian Cap. "
On the [undecipherable] [undecipherable] the Receipt of Captain Pithian of which below I add a Copy it appeared [undecipherable] final Settlement with him, the Receipt is as follows
" Haskell Ewing having received for my Company the [undecipherable] due them from [undecipherable] to the amount of [undecipherable: probable reading twenty] eight Pounds [undecipherable: probable reading fourteen] Shillings and [undecipherable] I [undecipherable] to have received [undecipherable] for the [undecipherable] thereof, and Cash " for the Balance remaining in his Hands December 30. 1796.
Seeby Pithian Capt "
