Dear Sir—
I know not to whom it officially appertains to put the Algerine Fleet to Sea— but as it appears to me that Something is wrong in the business as it now stands, I have thought it will not be amiss, to state to you that needless expence is accumulating— The Ship is ready for Sea, and has fallen down the Cove to wait her orders for sailing— The Captain expects Demurrage to commence immediately— This I conclude is understood by the Charter Party, of which he may have no knowledge— Captain Hayley says he is ready to sail at an hours notice, but does not know who to look to for orders— The other Vessels are [underline: not] ready— Capn Smith is at this late hour looking for Ballest— The Season is far advanced, and unless the Death of the Dey may have caused a pause, I fear not why they
they may not proceed— I am myself at a loss to determine, whether the getting them away falls under your notice or that of the Secretary of the Navy— but I do know that the business is at a stand, and all immediately concerned are desirous to receive orders to govern them in the present State of things— I conclude you are enjoying the Company of the Worthy Pinckneys— well may his Country, delight to honor them too— I trust they will— but Gerry— poor Gerry is in the back ground— I hope he will also come forward, and prove that he is entitled to the Eloge— well done good and faithful Servant— Present our respects to Mr Pickering— Many Deaths this morning— We all remain well— adieu—
Affectionately yours
Samuel Hodgdon
