Sir
Enclosed are Captain Stoddards and Gates's Pay Roll — Captain Stoddard has not included the Bounty due to each Recruit — I think in the odd days he has made in his pay roll one day to much; also an error of 16 Cents in the casting of Nathaniel Brewster's wages. —
Captain Gates has made his Pay roll out according to a form I gave him; — he has also paid the Soldiers some more Bounty since his and my monthly Returns. — Jacob Townsend was Returned the 4th of Octo: he was Enlisted the first day of that month, which error I shall rectify with Capt Gates. For the later I will so order, that the Soldiers have no more Bounty paid, after I transmit you my Monthly Returns but made out in the pay roll, according to the 30th Section of the recruiting Instructions, so as to prevent the increase and perplexity of duplicate Receipts —
I wish you to favour me with a form and Mode, and whether it will not be for the conveniency of your Office, to have all the Pay rolls for the Recruits made out alike and up to a certain period. if so I am certain I could better Inspect the Pay rolls & my Returns, that I transmit to the War Department —
I enclose you Capt Stoddard's duplicate Recept for Bounties Paid previous to the first of October — I have Inspected his and Capt Gates's Receipts for the Months of October & November, and wish to know whether they must be transmitted to Your Office for Inspection.
I am Sir
— yours with Respect
