240 Ji Philad.^a 5 October 1798 I have received your letter of the 4 Instant. The Muskets & Bayonets sent to Captain John Henry were imported Charleville such as the whole Army is supplied with — with respect to the accoutrements it is impossible for me to say who made them as they have been in the store for many years — Bayonet Scabbards are not in use in the Army but being in the Chests with the Arms they went with them — the other Belts may have shrunk or [undecipherable: probable reading "stif'nd"] but this would be remedied by use— These Arms, and supplies were rec^d from those for a long time deposited at Lamberton, and being in perfect order when sent there were not (I suppose) examined at our store when forwarded to York— The letter was delivered to M^r Caldwell enclosed to me Yesterday, I have a letter from M^r Iwan acknowledging the Receipt of the Patterns for Clothing sent him — I am Sir your most Obed^t Servant Samuel Hodgdon James M^c Henry Esq Secretary of War
