Trenton 8^th October. 1798. Sir This morning have received notice from Mr. Peter Helms Notary Public, advising me, that Charles is Nott — under my indorsement, discounted at the Bank of the United States, and unpaid, is delivered to him for Protest — Relying upon Mr Lee's attestation, to this Note — with which I have no other concern, than the indorsement — it had in reality escaped my recollection — and I must suppose that a certain degree of carelessness, consequent upon the epidemic in Philadelphia, and the removal of the Bank, fo prevented the [undecipherable] on he had made for the having cafe the Note, from coming to hand in due time. — To avoid on my responsibility I have now to a Thomson to apply the monies to my credit, at present in Bank — and as I neglected bringing my book back with me to state the residue if any, necessary to answer the Note — which will be immediately remitted when you will be pleased to forward to me the Note. — I am Sir Very much desirous [undecipherable] at James Whitney [torn/illegible at bottom left]
