Philada 28th Septr 1798 --
Sir
By order of the Secretary of War I send to you address the articles of Clothing inserted in the enclosed list or Invoice to answer as patterns for the part of the Clothing expected to be contracted for at Baltimore under your directions —
It is proper to mention, that having no Privates, Vests, Shirts or Woolen Overalls in Store, I have been obliged to send those received under former contracts for Serjeants — these parts of Clothing have usually cost 15 per Cent more than those of the same kinds furnished for Privates — but as I have selected the most ordinary that have passed inspection no great difference will be expected — I shall thank you to acknowledge the receipt of them and let me know when you receive them —
With Sentiments of esteem
I am your most Obedt Servt
